Club Esteem has been in operation for over 20 years, founded in 1991 by Gladys Williams, a grandmother who was alarmed by the challenges facing young people in her South Melbourne neighborhood of Lipscomb Park. Ms. Williams recognized the difficulty of youth making positive choices while living in a community struggling with crime, drug use, unemployment, teen pregnancy, and school dropout. In spring of 1991, she began a club for children and teens. The youth chose the name "Club Esteem" and defined their goals as staying in school, making good grades, and making positive life choices. From 1991 to 2003, Club Esteem met one night per week at Lipscomb Street Community Center. In 2003, the Junior League of South Brevard, City of Melbourne, and M.H. Williams Construction joined together to build Club Esteem a new facility. In 2004, the Club Esteem Youth and Family Center opened, offering expanded programs and services, five days per week.  

Club Esteem is not a typical “drop-in” after-school program.  Our main purpose is to challenge youth in grades 1st-12th from economically disadvantaged communities to embrace the highest standards of academic and personal excellence- instilling in each one a desire to learn, serve, and to accept challenges.  Our primary goal is to provide these youth with the skills and inspiration they need to break the cycle of poverty and develop into healthy, productive, vision-driven adults.  Club Esteem is open Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 6:30 and provides children and teens with an abundance of opportunities that they may otherwise never experience. 

CLUB ESTEEM BENEFITS- Club Esteem provides a safe place for children to learn, play, and grow. All of Club Esteem’s programs are free. In addition, Club Esteem provides daily snack, family assistance and parenting classes and resources to improve the children we serve and their family’s quality of life. Areas of emphasis: education, help combat hunger, assistance to our parents and grandparents who are raising grandchildren.

FAMILY PARTNERSHIP– All students and parents to sign a Commitment to Excellence Contract. Club Esteem requires a Commitment to Excellence Contract to be signed by enrolled students AND their parents, and youth must attend Club Esteem regular and pledge to strive for academic and personal excellence.

VOLUNTEER SUPPORT- Our staff and volunteers work diligently to ensure our elementary, middle, and high school students reach their academic and personal goals. During Scholar Hour and Study Hall teens receive tutoring by volunteer tutors to ensure they also achieved academic success. Our volunteer tutors are college/graduate students and faculty from Florida Institute of Technology, 15 volunteers from Florida Institute of Technology’s National Society of Black Engineers majoring in software, chemical, mechanical or electrical engineering tutor and help the high school students with their homework. Additional tutoring is also provided by software engineers from Harris Corporation, retired educators, Brevard Community College students, and other community members. STEM programming for our high school aged students is provided by Harris Corporation’s African-American Resource Group and 3 Solar System Ambassadors; one Ambassador has a degree in Earth Science, one has a degree in Molecular Biology and served with Girl Scouts for 15 years and is the recipient of the National Honoree of the Gold Award. Two retirees (one from Rockwell Collins Operations and Management and another US Air Force retiree) assist with goal setting and teen leadership classes. Approximately 35 Volunteers contribute an average of 45 minutes per day, 8-10 hours per week to our high school tutoring and enrichment programs.

EVAULATION- Measurable data is gathered from pre and post academic and behavior assessments, report cards, FCAT and SAT/ACT test scores, personal instructor observations, teacher’s comments, and parent surveys in order to determine each child’s progress. Internally, Club Esteem uses Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS), a comprehensive norm- referenced assessment of adaptive skills that help identify strengths and limitations. Supporting documents are used to monitor individual progress over time. Academic assessment materials include Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT), AIMS Student assessment, and Florida FCAT Coach (the leader in standards-based state customized test prep and for grades K-12th in reading, English, math, science, and social studies). Coach Tutor is aligned to state and national standards and is implemented during our tutoring sessions. Character Counts curriculum by the Josephson Institute Center for Youth Ethics is used during our character education time. Character Counts is aligned with McREL standards and benchmarks for K-12th education.
